The Horror of Supervillainy
The Supervillainy Saga, Book 7
by C.T. Phipps
Narrated by: Jeffrey Kafter
To Be a Superhero or Supervillain!
What do you do when you want to be a superhero, but you suck at it? Gary Karkofsky, better known as Merciless, the Supervillain without Mercy decides he would be better off as a superhero instead of a villain. His life is a mess – no one wants to be rescued by him, not even his friends or family! However, everything goes into a tailspin when he is asked to save the President’s daughter by none other than a Raven – yes, a Raven, as in a talking bird! Although Merciless is smart, will he figure out the treachery behind this situation? He is aided by friends who are angry with him (he banished them elsewhere) but they come together to defeat …
I love this series! CT Phipps, the author, does a stunning job of creating dialog between the characters and between Gary himself – I love hearing the internal conversations that Gary (aka Merciless) has with himself. The pop culture references are fun as I try to figure out where they come from and catch the slightly twisted reference meanings and how they fit with the situation. I enjoy Jane, the Weredeer immensely as well as Agent G. I enjoy the situations that Gary finds himself in and the crazy roundabout ways he gets himself out of them!
Phipps is methodical in his dialog and setting the twists. He brings in characters from his other worlds and makes them relevant to the situation. He excels at world-building as well as character and plot building. Further, he gives the listener some food for thought – specifically the value of family and forgiveness.
Jeffrey Kafer is the narrator who gives a top-notch performance. I am not sure how Kafer gets through some of the dialog out without laughing. Through his voice alone, he can project the self-assuredness and cockiness of Gary, the righteous anger of Diablo man, and the puns from Jane the Weredeer! The listener can see these actions clearly through the writing of Phipps and the performance of Kafer.
If you need a laugh mixed with some suspense and fun – don’t miss this book.
There were no issues with the production or quality of this audiobook. It was crisp and clear.
NOTE: Once again, CT Phipps is awarded the AudioBookReviewer Choice Award for this book as it deserves a much higher than a 5-star ranking!
